HANDLE LADDER · GET STARTED
Your first Handle Ladder drills start here.
No video needed. Pick a drill below, follow the sequence on the mat, and start building handles, footwork, and reaction speed right now.
The mat uses numbers 1–9 as targets, outside markers (O12, O3, O6, O9) for range, and colored dots (Blue, Green, Orange) for reaction training. Center 5 is always your reset point.

QUICK REFERENCE
How to read a drill sequence
Numbers (1–9)
Move to that numbered circle on the mat. Center 5 is your home base.
Outside Markers
O12, O3, O6, O9 are the outer clock positions. Push further out for range work.
Color Dots
Touch the colored dot with your free hand when you reach that circle. Keep the dribble alive.
Watch it in action
Between the Legs Sequence
Dribble between the legs while following the pattern 1 → 3 → 9 on the mat. Simple sequence, real reps. Build rhythm and control.
5 → 1 → 3 → 9 → 1 → 3 → 9 → 5
STARTER DRILLS
8 drills to get you moving
Work through these in order or pick whichever matches your level. Keep your dribble alive through every sequence.
Ball control + stance
Center Control
Sequence
5 (stationary)
Stand on center 5 in athletic stance. Pound dribble with your right hand for 30 seconds, then switch to left. Stay low, keep your eyes up.
This is your reset. Every drill starts and ends at 5.
Handles + movement
Inside Sweep
Sequence
5 → 1 → 5 → 9 → 5
Start at center 5. Dribble to 1 (left), back to 5, then to 9 (right), back to 5. Keep the ball in your outside hand as you move side to side.
Move your feet first, then the ball follows. Never reach without stepping.
Footwork + rhythm
Top-Bottom Ladder
Sequence
5 → 7 → 5 → 3 → 5
Start at 5. Step forward to 7 (top), back to 5, then step back to 3 (bottom), return to 5. Dribble with each step. Keep the rhythm consistent.
Think of it like a vertical ladder. Forward-back, forward-back.
Direction changes
Triangle Run
Sequence
5 → 4 → 6 → 5
Start center. Move to 4 (top-left), cut to 6 (bottom-right), then reset to 5. Dribble the whole time. Use crossovers at each change of direction.
The triangle forces you to change direction without slowing down your dribble.
Full mat movement
Clock Sweep
Sequence
5 → 7 → 8 → 9 → 6 → 3 → 2 → 1 → 4 → 5
Start center and sweep around every numbered circle clockwise. Maintain your dribble through each position. Reset at 5 when done. Then go counterclockwise.
Start slow. Speed comes after clean footwork. If you lose the ball, restart from 5.
Explosiveness + reach
Outside Markers
Sequence
5 → O12 → 5 → O3 → 5 → O6 → 5 → O9 → 5
From center 5, explode out to the outside marker at 12 o'clock, return to 5. Repeat for 3, 6, and 9 positions. These are further away, so push your range.
Outside markers test your ability to stay controlled at full extension.
Reaction speed + coordination
Color Touch Reaction
Sequence
5 → 7B → 5 → 2B → 5 → 9G → 5 → 6O → 5
Move to a numbered circle and touch the colored dot on it with your free hand while keeping your dribble alive. B = Blue, G = Green, O = Orange. Have a partner call them out for extra difficulty.
The colored dots train your eyes and coordination. Dribble never stops.
Handles + combos
Crossover Ladder
Sequence
5 → 1 → 9 → 1 → 9 → 5
From 5, dribble left to 1 with your right hand. Crossover, push to 9 with your left hand. Crossover again back to 1. Repeat, then reset at 5.
The crossover happens at each number. Stay low so the move is tight and fast.
Create your own drills
The Handle Ladder is open-ended. Use any number, marker, and color combination you want. Write your sequences down, time yourself, or challenge a teammate to beat your pattern.
- Use numbers 1–9 for inner targets and O12, O3, O6, O9 for outside markers.
- Add B (Blue), G (Green), or O (Orange) after any number to include a color touch.
- Start and end every drill at 5 (center) for a clean reset.
- Write your sequences down. Share them with teammates or challenge a friend.
- Start with 3–5 targets per drill. Add more as you get comfortable.
Example custom drill:
5 → 4 → O12 → 8 → 5 → B → 9 → O → 6
Center → Top Left → Outside Top → Top Right → Center → Blue Dot → Right → Orange Dot → Bottom Right
