The scouting report on Theo was simple, and he could feel it from the opening tip: he's the small one, go at him. They posted him on one end and put their tallest guard on him at the other. Theo is the smallest player on his varsity — the kid who still gets "what grade are you in?" from somebody's dad in the stands. He heard it in warmups. By the end of the first quarter he'd started agreeing with the report, and that was the real problem — not the matchup, the agreeing.
The spiral
Being targeted made Theo play backward. He gave ground so he wouldn't get shot over. He stopped reaching so he wouldn't foul. On offense he waited — for a screen, for someone else to get open, for a safe pass instead of a good one. And the less he did, the more his defender sagged off, happy to let the small kid stand in the corner — which left him even less room the next trip. He was playing not to get embarrassed, which is a slow way to get embarrassed anyway.
The turn: decide in half a second
Theo couldn't change the height. He could go back to the skill he'd actually trained — his quickness and handle — and use it before a set defender could dictate terms. That's the .5 mentality: when the ball hits your hands, take about half a second to decide, and move while you still have the step. This defender was toughest when Theo let him plant and read; an early decision made him move his feet instead.
- 1Catch ready — on balance, eyes up, before the ball arrives.
- 2Read — in that half-second: shot, drive, or pass?
- 3Act — commit to the first good option and go, before he's set.
Next trip, Theo caught it ready at the top. His man was still backpedaling into the paint, waiting. Point-five. Theo took the one dribble the sag gave him, got downhill before the big guard could slide over, and dropped a floater off the glass. Walking back on defense he still had the harder job — the kid was still taller — but for the first time all night he'd made the defense react to him. He didn't need to win the matchup. He needed to stop handing it over.
Do This Now
- On every catch next game, count "point-five" and make your move before you finish the count — shoot, drive, or pass, no freezing. That habit can change how you affect the game.
