Ball Handling

Crossovers on the Move

Transfer stationary crossover control into movement.

Level: Beginner

Duration: 20s

Equipment: Basketball

Tracking: combo

How to run it

The crossover is your core change-of-direction move. A sharp, low crossover sells the defender one way and gets you going the other — but only if the ball stays low and your feet move with it.

Steps

  1. Start in a balanced stance, ball in your strong hand.
  2. Push the ball low and across your body, catching it clean on the other hand.
  3. Change direction with your feet as the ball crosses — not after.
  4. Keep the crossover below your knees and repeat under control.

Focus on

  • Low and quick
  • Sell the fake
  • Push off the back foot

Coaching cues

  • Cross below the knees — the lower the crossover, the harder it is to steal.
  • Change speeds: sell slow, cross fast.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Crossing the ball too high, where it is easy to poke away.
  • Crossing with your hands but not moving your feet.
